How it works
How progress is calculated
Progress is the share of the book behind you. A page becomes a percent by dividing it by the book’s length; a percent becomes a page by multiplying it back. Ebook locations work the same way, against the total number of locations.
Percent=page you’re on÷book length
187÷412=45.3%
Page=percent×book length
45%×412≈p. 185
Print page=(location ÷ total locations)×print pages
(2,300 ÷ 5,678)×412≈p. 167
When the text starts later
Introductions, contents and maps can take a dozen pages before the first chapter. If you enter the first page of the text, both the page you’re on and the book’s length are counted from there.
(187 − 8)÷(412 − 8)=44.3%
Ebooks vs print
Why ebook percent and print pages don’t match
An ebook has no fixed pages. Text reflows to fit your screen and font size, so a “page” on an e-reader is just one screenful. That’s why e-readers count progress in percent or locations instead, and why those numbers rarely line up with a printed copy.
- Front matter3%
- The text88%
- Notes and back matter9%
- The percent covers the whole file. Notes, acknowledgements, an index and previews of other books all count, so the story often ends somewhere between 85 and 95%.
- Locations are fixed chunks of text. They don’t change with font size, which makes them steadier than ebook pages, but they don’t correspond to any printed page.
- Print editions differ too. A hardback, a paperback and a large-print edition of the same book can differ by a hundred pages or more.
- Some ebooks carry real page numbers. When the publisher includes them, your e-reader can show the page from one specific print edition. Use that edition’s length here.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
What percent of a book is page 100?
Divide 100 by the number of pages. In a 400-page book page 100 is 25%; in a 250-page book it’s 40%.
How do I convert a Kindle percent to a page number?
Multiply the percent by the page count of the print edition. 45% of a 412-page book is page 185. If your Kindle shows real page numbers for that edition, you can read the page off directly.
Why did my ebook end at 92%?
The percent covers everything in the file, including notes, acknowledgements and previews of other books. The story itself ends earlier.
Should I count the introduction?
Only if you’re reading it. If you skip front matter, enter the page where the text starts, and progress is counted from there.
How does ReadList track progress?
You log a page, a percent or a time, whichever your book shows, and ReadList keeps the history of each update for that book.
